Position Overview

The Director, Business Development oversees the pitches, proposals and RFP processes, and works with partners to convert business opportunities into retainers.

Key Accountabilities

  • Liaise directly with partners to identify opportunities for pitches and RFPs and work closely with BD team members to develop and execute pitches, proposals and responses to RFPs from clients and potential clients.
  • Work closely with lawyers to oversee and prepare submissions for ranking directories (i.e., Chambers, IFLR, Legal 500, etc.).
  • Develop familiarity with the specific requirements of each practice group, the firm’s experience in each area and the partners active in each of them.
  • Act as the lead manager on the most complex and strategically important proposals.
  • Introduce improved processes and templates for proposal document production.
  • Train/coach lawyers and BD team on best practices in proposal management and delivery.
  • Maintain an up to date and accessible warehouse of templates, practice descriptions, standard copy, generic capability statements and lawyer CVs.
  • Monitor and report on win/loss percentages.
  • Proactively work with the Marketing Technology team to capture practice experience in the marketing firm system (Foundation).
  • Oversee and support BD trips by lawyers, and track referral activity in the marketing firm system
  • Together with the Marketing Technology team, work with external vendor (Foundation) to ensure adherence to contract terms and service level agreements and improve service delivery to meet firm needs.
  • Provide direction, coaching and development support to direct reports to ensure the team is engaged and capable of delivering on their accountabilities and meeting service standards of the department (in line with department goals/objectives).

Attributes & Experience

  • Post-secondary degree in Business, Marketing, Communication, or related experience.
  • 10+ years of previous experience in working on competitive proposals and pitches, preferably within a professional services firm.
  • In-depth knowledge of legal markets and the legal professional landscape.
  • Proficient in MS Office product suite.
  • Strong client service orientation combined with the ability to manage multiple client needs at the same time.
  • Highly organized, proactive, and confident individual with a strong client service orientation.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) with the ability to interact with individuals at all levels within and outside the organization with tact and diplomacy.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work well both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Proven strategic thinking and analytical skills, with strong relationship building skills and active listening capabilities.
  • Excellent leadership, relationship, collaboration and consultation skills and the ability to work with poise and discretion.
  • Excellent time and project management skills to effectively prioritize and meet deadlines in a high-pressure environment.

Additional information

This position is part of our hybrid work model with 3 days in the office per week. As part of our onboarding, new hires are required to be in the office more often for the first few months of employment to ensure they receive the requisite cross training.
