Position Overview

The Manager, Marketing is responsible for delivering client initiatives and supporting the business development goals of legal professionals in the Calgary office. The role manages all external and internal events, such as corporate culture programs, student recruitment, client engagements, and community investment activities. As an extension of the firm’s Marketing & Business Development team, the Manager collaborates with legal professionals to plan and execute key deliverables, and works closely with the Events team to ensure alignment and seamless execution of all firm-hosted initiatives.

Key Accountabilities

Events

  • Oversee internal events and act as the Calgary point of contact for firmwide initiatives, including the holiday party, annual firm weekend, mental health week, bar calls, diversity, women, wellness, mentor month, summer/articling student welcome/farewell, U of C events, etc.
  • Manage all activities related to the planning, organization and execution of various client marketing events such as round tables, deal closing dinners, sponsored conferences, the Stampede Party, Women in Law, Calgary Pride, etc.
  • Oversee ticket program for Calgary Flames Club Seats, Saddledome Suite for hockey and concerts and Rodeo tickets for Calgary Stampede.
  • Manage Calgary events calendar, connecting initiatives to overall BD goals of the office and of the firm, ensuring regularity of high value interaction with target clients.

 BD and Client Development Activities & Promotion/Awareness

  • Work closely with the Marketing & Business Development Team, manage the office-wide Target Client BD program, including assisting with the development of the office’s top 10 Target List, leading Target Team quarterly meetings of client teams, and making recommendations as it relates to how best to engage with Targets.
  • Provide individual support to Calgary partners, counsel & associates on advancing their BD and client development goals, including recommending strategies and executing on same (such as through client-focused events, participation in firm marketing opportunities, conferences and BD trips, among other strategies).
  • Develop and implement, in coordination with the Director, Professional Resources & Administration, BD training and education for Calgary office associates.
  • Manage Community Investment requests and opportunities, engaging with community representatives to sponsor and participate in charitable events and manage the sponsor benefits to maximize Torys presence at these events.
  • Work with the Marketing & Business Development Team to advance and implement firm-wide initiatives designed to highlight the Calgary office.
  • Work closely with the Marketing & Business Development Team to conduct research and analysis of market developments and opportunities in support of expanding client relationships.
  • Develop high quality and targeted initiatives such as client seminars and presentations and client positioning activities to capitalize on opportunities.

 Client Professional Development (CPD)

  • Work with the internal learning team to plan and deliver professional development sessions to Calgary clients on a variety of market and legal developments.
  • Partner with Calgary lawyers and the Marketing & Business Development Team to generate client communications and thought leadership to communicate developments.
  • Coordinate Calgary involvement in Quarterly Reports.

Client/Vendor Engagement

  • Work with external vendors to ensure adherence to contract terms and service level agreements. Act as the liaison to translate business requirements of the program and/or process and oversee the build and delivery of customized solutions.
  • Build and manage relationships with stakeholders (internal and external) and identifying opportunities to support their business requirements.

 Other

  • Manage and monitor expenses against budget for various GLs.
  • Support business and client development initiatives, and other departmental writing and editing as required.
  • Participate in committees, initiatives, programs, and projects as needed.

Attributes & Experience

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in business, marketing, communications, or related experience.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in a marketing and/or business development role, preferably within a professional services firm.
  • Prior management experience is required.
  • Significant event planning experience is necessary.
  • Knowledge of legal markets and the legal professional landscape is an asset.
  • Proficient in MS Office product suite.
  • Exceptional client service orientation with a proven track record of ‘going above and beyond’ to service clients.
  • Ability to communicate effectively (verbally and in writing) to a broad range of audiences including to senior management, partners and clients.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a proven ability to establish and build trust-based working relationships.
  • Ability to plan, organize, schedule and deliver within tight deadlines in a high-pressure environment.
  • Strong leadership, relationship, collaboration and consultation skills and the ability to work with tact, poise and discretion.
  • Sound judgement and decisiveness; strong strategic and analytical thinking skills.
  • Proven project management experience and a demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage complex projects.
  • Determined with a can-do, hands-on approach; driven by delivery and end results.
  • Ability to interpret plans, objectives priorities and develop relevant activities and initiatives aligned with them.
  • Successful experience working with and leveraging relationships with vendors.

Additional information

This position is part of our hybrid work model with 4 days in the office per week. As part of our onboarding, new hires are required to be in the office more often for the first few months of employment to ensure they receive the requisite cross training.
